Cytology is a department of the Department of Pathology and Molecular Pathology. It plays an important role in modern diagnostics of various diseases. Cytological material provides minimally invasive diagnostic material, which in combination with modern additional methods can potentially provide valuable information about the pathological tissue changes.
Cytology refers to the science of the structure and function of a cell. Cytological diagnostics (forms/orders) deals with reliable and timely early detection of pathological changes on small amounts of tissue samples. Not only direct smears are examined, but also sediments of various body fluids as well as fine needle punctates of tissue swellings. Fine needle punctates of superficially located organs are sometimes performed by a specialist cytopathologist. In addition to the microscopic evaluation of conventionally stained smears, we have a wide range of additional examinations at our disposal: Immunocytochemistry, cell block and thin-layer methods, as well as molecular biological methods such as human papillomavirus (HPV) typing.
