Cancer Registry of the Cantons of Zurich, Zug, Schaffhausen and Schwyz

For the assessment of cancer incidence and thus of cancer risks, cancer registries have made an essential contribution to cancer cause research and control worldwide for decades. Since 1.1.2020, the federal Cancer Registration Act has been in force, which regulates the nationwide registration of cancer cases and certain precancerous lesions.

The canton of Zurich has maintained an epidemiological cancer registry since 1980 at the Institute of Pathology and Molecular Pathology of the University Hospital Zurich in close collaboration with the Institute of Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Prevention (EBPI) of the University of Zurich. Since 2011, the registry has also collected data for the canton of Zug, and since 1.1.2020 for the cantons of Schaffhausen and Schwyz.

The core task of the registry is to record as many new cases of cancer as possible in the population, and thus to document the cancer burden of the population in the form of monitoring.

The new Cancer Registration Act (KRG) and the associated Cancer Registration Ordinance (KRV) ensure that the necessary data on cancer cases are collected comprehensively, completely and in full. Physicians, laboratories, hospitals and other private or public healthcare institutions are required by law to report relevant data to the cancer registry.
