Interventional Neuroradiology

The field of interventional neuroradiology includes all minimally invasive examinations and treatments of vascular diseases of the central nervous system. With these methods, only a small incision is made in the groin or at the wrist. A catheter is inserted through the incision and into the blood vessels in order to treat them. Traditional open surgery is thus not necessary. Compared to open surgery, the risk for adverse outcomes is lower and patients recover more quickly from the procedure.

Interventional methods are versatile and have many applications. Our experts apply them to treat strokes (ischemic and hemorrhagic) and for preventive treatments of vascular malformations and other diseases of the brain and spine.

Interventional methods can be used in the following cases:

  • The reopening of occluded or severely constricted vessels in ischemic stroke
  • The treatment of cerebral aneurysms that have ruptured causing severe cerebral hemorrhage, or aneurysms that have an increased risk of bleeding.
  • Vascular malformations such as arteriovenous malformations (AVM) of the brain and spine, and vascular diseases of the venous system of the brain (dural arteriovenous fistula)
  • Diseases of the lacrimal tract
