FDG PET (oncology and infectiology)

18F-FDG is the PET tracer most commonly used in nuclear medicine today. 18F-FDG is a structurally poorly altered, radioactively labeled sugar. After injection into the body, the tracer is distributed in the tissues and is absorbed by the cells that have a high turnover of sugar (brain, heart, malignant tumors and metastases).

On the axial fused images, focal FDG additional enrichments can be assigned to the anatomical structures. Thanks to the additional CT examination, the size and local extent of the primary tumor can be determined (yellow arrow). In addition, metastases can be detected in lymph nodes or other organs, as in this case a rib metastasis (red arrow).

  • Oncology
  • Infectiology
    • Fever of unknown origin
    • Echinococcosis
    • Large vessel vasculitis suspected
    • Suspected infection of vascular grafts
