Andreas Grüntzig Fellowship

The Andreas Grüntzig Catheterization Laboratories offer a 2-year fellowship in Interventional Cardiology.

The program provides full training in all aspects of adult interventional cardiology according to the EAPCI curriculum. During this 2-year program, fellows acquire the theoretical and technical skills necessary to care for patients with acute and chronic coronary syndromes. The fellowship program offers a core-procedural training in case-based diagnostics such as coronary angiography, right heart catheterization, intravascular ultrasound, OCT imaging, functional lesion assessment (FFR, iFR), and assessment of vascular function (vasoreactivity testing, CFR, IMR). Further, fellows train in interventional techniques for the treatment of coronary artery disease, including the use of high-pressure balloons, intracoronary lithotripsy, and rotational atherectomy, various stents, drug-coated balloons, and mechanical circulatory support systems. During weekend and night calls, fellows gain invaluable experience in treating complex patients with acute coronary syndromes and cardiogenic shock. According to their previous education, fellows start as primary operator for diagnostic procedures and then advance to percutaneous coronary interventions for type A lesions, followed by more complex lesions. Fellows get also experience in the treatment of patients with left main disease, highly calcified lesions, graft failures, and chronic total occlusions. Fellows are expected and encouraged to participate in interventional research projects.

Gotschy, MD: “The focus on interdisciplinary cooperation is a key strength of the fellowship at the Andreas Grüntzig Catheterizaton Laboratories. Complex cases are routinely discussed with experts in interventional cardiology, cardiovascular surgery and cardiac imaging at weekly meetings. The meetings focus on patients with coronary and valve diseases and are often complemented by dedicated teaching sessions for the fellows.“

Cieslik, MD: “The fellowship in interventional cardiology at the Andreas Grüntzig Catheterization Laboratories gave me a great opportunity to became familiar with all the diagnostic and procedural techniques for the treatment of coronary artery disease. During the two-year training program, I have acquired expertise as primary operator in a wide range of percutaneous coronary interventions under supervision of Prof. Templin`s team. As fellow, I have also had the chance to participate in various research projects which allowed me to improve my theoretical knowledge in the field of interventional cardiology.”

Candreva, MD: „The frequent use of intracoronary imaging (IVUS, OCT, and NIRS-IVUS) as well as advanced plaque-modification tools (rotational atherectomy and intravascular lithotripsy) during the fellowship at the Andreas Grüntzig Catheterizaton Laboratories allows trainees to get familiar with the management of complex lesions and perform state-of-the-art coronary interventions in a protected and supervised environment.“
