Talk – Role of hypothalamic astrocytes in the regulation of energy balance

Hypothalamic astrocytes play pivotal roles in both nutrient availability sensing and the modulation of synaptic plasticity. Although neurons rely greatly on glucose-derived fuels, astrocytes have high capacity for fatty acid oxidation in mitochondria. We showed that genetic manipulations of fatty acid levels determines the susceptibility to diet-induced obesity.
